Mindfulness is a helpful practice for developing core SEL skills in the classroom. the Small Surprises Mindfulness Activity allows students to consciously build awareness of the world around them, which in turn strengthens both self-awareness and social awareness, 2 of the 5 core SEL competencies from CASEL.
By taking the time to simply focus on what they see, touch, taste, feel, or smell throughout their day, students can unknowingly become more aware of the ways that different sensory experiences can impact their emotions. They can then take what they have noticed through these “Small Surprises” and share it in a creative way that fosters communication and writing skills outside of the typical 5-paragraph essay.
